A Skilled Worker document checklist should distinguish evidence everyone needs from evidence triggered by their circumstances. Identity, sponsorship and English sit at the core. TB screening, criminal record certificates, ATAS and family evidence require separate checks. Ordering every possible certificate can waste money; omitting a triggered document can leave the application incomplete.

Start with the application facts

Write down where you are applying, where you have lived, the exact job and occupation code, the sponsoring employer and the family members applying. Keep a dated copy of the official document guidance. These facts determine which questions to investigate; nationality alone is rarely a complete document plan.

Use one evidence row per requirement. The row should identify the purpose, issuing organisation, person responsible, expected delivery date and any translation. Separate “requested,” “received” and “reviewed.” A file existing in a folder does not mean its content has been checked.

Handle medical screening as a specific requirement

The official Skilled Worker guidance links to TB requirements for listed countries. Follow that route to check applicability and approved testing arrangements before booking. Do not assume that a general medical examination, a private clinic letter or an employer’s occupational health check replaces the required certificate.

Plan appointment availability and the time needed to receive a result. Keep medical information private and share it only through the appropriate application or clinical channel. A recruiter asking for a large bundle of health records should explain what is required, why and how it will be protected.

Check criminal records and sensitive research separately

Some jobs require a criminal record certificate for an application from outside the UK. The official guidance identifies relevant occupational areas and links to country-specific arrangements. Establish which countries and periods need investigation before requesting a single certificate and assuming the task is complete.

ATAS is another conditional item. Where a research role involves a sensitive subject at the relevant level, ask the employer to confirm the assessment and application details. Keep that question visible until resolved. A scientific job title alone is not a complete ATAS analysis.

Make translations and identity links part of the plan

For documents not in English or Welsh, check the certified translation requirement. Store the original and translation together using matching filenames. Review names, dates, institutions and document references across both versions. Ask the translator to correct an error rather than editing the translated file yourself.

Create an identity note if different documents use different names or transliterations. Identify the official record connecting them. A simple explanation supported by a genuine document is preferable to hiding the discrepancy until a form forces an answer.

Review the sponsorship details with HR

Ask for the relevant CoS information and compare it with your passport, job description, salary, occupation code and work location. A transposed digit or outdated salary should be addressed through the sponsor’s proper correction process. Do not copy an error into the application to make two incorrect records agree.

Keep a short question log for HR. Group factual corrections separately from questions about immigration rules. This helps the employer route each issue to the right person and avoids losing an important uncertainty in a long email thread.

Run a document rehearsal

Before submitting, open every file on a different device if available. Check all pages are present, readable, correctly oriented and associated with the right applicant. Review the application answer beside the document that supports it. A final rehearsal should reveal contradictions while there is still time to resolve them.

For a family application, repeat the process for each person. Keep a shared index but separate personal folders. The worker’s document does not automatically establish a partner’s relationship evidence or a child’s circumstances.

Use an unresolved-items list

A complete preparation file can still contain a legal question. Record it plainly, with the evidence already available and the decision needed. Do not mark a conditional requirement “not applicable” merely because obtaining the document is inconvenient. Resolve the trigger, then record the reason.

The printable map below focuses on ownership and consistency. It is intended to support an application-specific checklist built from current official guidance, not replace the checklist shown in your own application process.

Worked review: an incomplete conditional checklist

An illustrative applicant downloads a generic checklist containing passport, English and bank statement rows. Their proposed research job may also need a separate review of ATAS, while their residence history raises a TB-screening question. The generic list has no place to record either decision, so both appear complete by omission.

The applicant adds a conditional-evidence section and asks the responsible source the exact trigger questions. Each answer is recorded with the current official guidance and the evidence needed. If a requirement does not apply, the matrix explains why; if it does, the document owner and expected date are recorded.

The review also finds a translation using a different name spelling. Rather than altering the certificate scan, the applicant contacts the issuer or translator to establish an appropriate correction or identity link. The final folder contains a coherent record, not merely more files.

A practical final-file test

Read each application answer and point to the record that supports it. Check that the record belongs to the correct person, includes every relevant page and remains legible at ordinary zoom. Test the filename and orientation, then confirm that the version in the submission folder is the reviewed one.

If an item is still uncertain, keep it in an unresolved list with an owner. Do not remove a row to make the checklist look finished. A visible conditional question is easier to resolve than a missing requirement discovered after submission.
